The Church of Our Holy Saviour

The Federal Territory of Labuan is located in the Eastern Malaysia region of Borneo Island. It is a small island which does not have a large population like other cities and states of Malaysia. Within the Federal Territory of Labuan is the Church of Our Holy Saviour, which is one of the oldest churches here.

James Brooke, who has been instrumental in developing many part of Borneo was the first Governor of Labuan in 1846 and this would then lead to the consecration of the St Saviour’s Church in 1866. Development of the church grew rapidly and in 1936, there were enough funds to establish a new church and this was where The Church of Our Holy Saviour was born. The church will then undergo several changes in terms of clergy which will see the numbers exceeding 100 members in 1982 which means a larger space would be required.

This then brought about the building of the church building which is where it is to present day. Today, the Church of Our Holy Saviour provides several support movements for its members. Weekly worship sessions are held while members can join either the Adult ministry, the youth for growing teenagers and young adults, the children zone for kids and the young ones or the UMS Campus Zone. Besides that, the church has a Anglican Matriculation Christian Fellowship and works closely with other churches around the region. This includes the Holy Cross Mission District in Kuala Sapi, the Faith Christian Center in Sunway and Kuala Penyu’s Gereja Sumur Hidup.
